Urinalysis

Urinalysis For Your Pet | Koroit Veterinary Clinic

Lab Urinalysis

When your dog or cat isn’t themselves, a simple urine test can tell us a surprising amount about what’s going on inside. Urinalysis is one of the core diagnostic tools we use at Koroit Veterinary Clinic to check kidney function, bladder health and general wellbeing.

Urinalysis FAQs

Just a few common questions about Urinalysis. If there is something else you need to know just ask in the Contact Us form below!

  • Can urinalysis alone diagnose everything?

No. Urinalysis is a very useful piece of the puzzle, but not the whole picture. It works best when combined with: A thorough physical examination, blood tests, imaging (X-rays or ultrasound) where needed

  • How is my pet’s urine collected?

Depending on the case, we may: Ask you to collect a free catch sample at home or in the clinic, collect urine with a catheter, use cystocentesis (a needle into the bladder) for a very sterile sample.

  • Can I just bring a sample from home?

Yes, but there are rules! It must be in a clean, dry container (soap residue can ruin the test). It must be fresh. Urine changes within 30 minutes. If you can’t get here immediately, keep the jar in the fridge, but no longer than a few hours.

  • My dog has "Crystals." Does he need surgery?

Not always. If we catch them early (when they are microscopic sand), we can often dissolve them with a special prescription diet (Urinary S/O or c/d) before they turn into large stones that require surgery.
