Does a video otoscope exam hurt?
It shouldn’t be painful, but ears that are inflamed can be very sensitive. If your pet is sore, we adjust our approach and may recommend sedation so the exam can be done gently and safely.
Will my pet need sedation or an anaesthetic?
Not always. Calm pets with mild disease may be examined awake, but painful ears, very narrow canals, or the need for a deep clean often make sedation the kinder option.
Can you remove a grass seed or foreign object during the exam?
Sometimes, yes. If it’s visible and accessible, removal may be possible, but if the ear is painful or the object is deep, sedation is often recommended for safety.
How is this different from a standard ear check?
A standard otoscope gives a limited view. The video otoscope provides a larger, clearer image and often helps us assess deeper structures and document what we see.
